VENTRICULOPERITONEAL SHUNT WITH VALVE INSTALLATION FOR HYDROCEPHALUS TREATMENT MIS

The Ventriculoperitoneal shunt with hydrocephalus valve installation MIS or hydrocephalus valve placement MIS, means that a valve system is placed and insures circulation bypass of the cerebrospinal fluid  between the brain ventricles and the peritoneal cavity. The procedures is performed in order to treat hydrocephalus.

In particular, this neurosurgical procedure alleviates the local accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the  ventricles of the brain, passing the fluid to the peritoneal (or cardiac ) cavity where it is absorbed.

To achieve this drainage, a special system (central tube, valve, drainage tube) called a  “ventriculoperitoneal shunt” is placed.

There are several types of valves available and there are used according to the type of pathology and indications of use.

The Ventriculoperitoneal shunt with hydrocephalus valve installation MIS is performed under general anesthesia. The duration of hospitalization is 1-3 days.

Note: Depending on its etiology, hydrocephalus can be treated endoscopically with endoscopic third ventriculostomy ETV.
